Interpreting Solar Wind Data
For auroras, solar wind speed and “Bz” usually matter more than almost anything else.

Reading the Solar Wind Dashboard
Solar wind is the stream of particles flowing from the Sun all the time, and it’s one of the best “right now” indicators for geomagnetic activity. When the solar wind changes, Earth’s magnetic environment can respond quickly, which is why this dashboard is so useful.
For beginners, two values carry most of the signal: speed and Bz. Speed is the “push” — faster wind tends to hit Earth harder. Bz is the direction of the solar wind’s magnetic field, and it acts like a gate. When Bz is negative (southward), Earth can couple with the solar wind more effectively, which increases the chance of geomagnetic activity and auroras. When Bz is positive, the same storm “push” can produce much less.
The other lines add context. Bt (total magnetic field strength) tells you how strong the magnetic part of the wind is, and higher Bt can amplify things when Bz is negative. Density can make the impact feel sharper, especially if it spikes at the same time as favorable Bz.
In practice, if you see fast wind and sustained negative Bz, it’s a good moment to check Alerts and Kp — not because the charts are complicated, but because those three pieces together usually tell a clear story.
