Understanding the Observatories Dashboard
The Observatories dashboard is the “eyes” part of space weather: it’s where you can literally see what the Sun is doing, instead of only reading numbers. The mistake most beginners make is trying to understand every wavelength channel. You don’t need that — you just need to know what each view is good for.
If you want to spot big, Earth‑relevant events, LASCO (from SOHO) is a great place to look. It blocks the bright disk of the Sun so you can see the faint outer atmosphere, which is where CMEs show up as bright clouds expanding outward. A CME in LASCO doesn’t automatically mean “storm incoming,” but it’s a strong hint to keep an eye on the next couple of days.
For longer‑lasting patterns, AIA 193 (from SDO) is useful because it makes coronal holes stand out as darker regions. Coronal holes are linked to faster solar wind streams, which can raise geomagnetic activity when they reach Earth. And if you’re curious where flare‑productive regions live, a magnetogram helps you see where magnetic fields are strong and complex — that’s often where the Sun stores energy.
A simple way to use the page is: notice something visually (a CME or a large coronal hole), then switch back to Alerts and solar wind over the next 1–3 days to see whether it actually becomes an Earth‑impacting event.
