Nearly every space weather site is reading the same underlying data — NOAA’s public feeds. What separates them is who they’re built for. Here are five worth knowing, and when each one is the right tab to open.

1. NOAA SWPC — the source of truth
The US Space Weather Prediction Center is the official operational authority. It issues the watches, warnings and alerts that grid operators and airlines act on, and it publishes the G/S/R scales everyone else quotes.
Its data is public and free — planetary K-index, DSCOVR solar wind, GOES X-ray flux, the OVATION aurora model — with no key and no paywall. Almost everything below is built on it.
Best for: the authoritative call, and raw data. Weakness: built for operators. Dense, jargon-heavy, and it will never tell you whether to go outside.
2. GalaxOS — location-specific answers
Our bias is obvious, so here’s the specific thing we do that the others don’t: turn a planetary Kp into an answer for one place.
Kp is a global average. Whether you’ll see anything depends on your geomagnetic latitude — not your latitude on a map — plus tonight’s cloud cover and whether your sky gets dark at all this time of year. We compute that for over 200 locations, and tell you honestly when the answer is no.

Best for: understanding why today is interesting, and seeing what people actually photographed. Weakness: it’s a daily blog, not a live dashboard. Not the place for real-time numbers.
4. SpaceWeatherLive — community and alerting
Strong real-time charts, a well-established community, historical archives going back decades, and mobile apps with push alerts. Its archive is genuinely useful if you want to know how often Kp 7 actually happens where you live.
Best for: live charts, push notifications, historical context. Weakness: like NOAA, largely planetary numbers — the “what does this mean for me” step is left to you.
5. SolarHam — built for radio operators
Aimed squarely at amateur radio. Solar flux, sunspot numbers, flare activity and HF propagation conditions, laid out for people whose hobby depends on the ionosphere.
Best for: ham radio propagation. Weakness: if you’re here for aurora, most of it isn’t aimed at you.
